US National Whitewater CenterCharlotte, North Carolina

ColeJenest & Stone provided civil engineering and landscape architecture services for the U.S. National Whitewater Center, located along the scenic Catawba River between Charlotte and Gastonia, North Carolina. The 307- acres of woodlands and varied terrain offers spectacular views of the river and unique Piedmont landscape. The center consists of a variety of recreational elements including a multiple-channel artificial river that can be adjusted to Class II through IV skill levels from the seven pumps, weighing 12,500 pounds each that move more than 536,000 gallons of water per minute. Facilities incorporate the “natural” river, a 37-acre island for primitive camping, a high adventure center with climbing facilities, trails, fully guided rafting trips, restaurant and conference room meeting facilities, lawn area seating for spectators at events, facilities for firefighters to conduct swift water rescue training sessions, and a stage for outdoor concerts and entertainment.
