ColeJenest & Stone was conceived in August 1987, when North Carolina State University College of Design graduates Michael Cole and Brian Jenest teamed to create a landscape architecture firm dedicated to exceptional client service and progressive design solutions. After working for two prominent Charlotte architecture firms, Michael and Brian set up shop in a cramped upstairs Myers Park guestroom using hollow-core doors for desks, a second-hand Macintosh computer, and a clattering dot matrix printer. Over the next several years, Michael and Brian developed an impressive list of public and private clients with projects scattered across North and South Carolina and Virginia.

In 1993, the firm relocated from a second-floor Dilworth office condominium to a modern two-story building on 7th Street, across from Spirit Square and four blocks from Trade and Tryon Streets. The firm has had an uptown Charlotte address ever since. They soon recognized the need for in-house civil engineering capabilities and Dudley Stone joined the firm as a managing partner in 1995. In 2003 the company opened a Raleigh office and has established a robust landscape architecture and civil engineering presence in the Triangle and across eastern North Carolina. Today, the full-service site design firm boasts a legacy of quality, innovation, and value. Collaboration is the key to our success, with clients and designers working together to create enduring land planning solutions. Though still a member of the Board of Directors, Dudley retired in 2009, and the firm began a carefully planned ownership transition to the next generation of leaders. Michael enjoyed a two-year sabbatical in 2016 returning in 2018 as Principal and Director of Business Development. As Chairman, Brian is focused on leading the company to the next level.

Brian is supported by Managing Partner Kevin Ammons, a South Carolina native and Clemson graduate with a background in both engineering and landscape architecture. Partner and Director of Engineering Todd Fisher, a firm veteran since 2005, is joined by Partner and Director of Operations Mark McAuley who holds a civil engineering degree from NC State. Rounding out the executive leadership is Principal and Director of Landscape Architecture Susan Freyler, also an NC State grad who has been with ColeJenest & Stone since 1991, and Marshall Giles, Principal and Director of Design & Planning.

ColeJenest & Stone has completed almost 5,000 projects since founded in 1988 and won numerous design and engineering awards across every market sector. The practice is studio-based and project manager-centric, and the firm is structured to support knowledgeable staff assigned to each client and project.
