ColeJenest & Stone is passionate about park and greenway design and dedicated to a set of strong guiding principles developed over the past 30 years. Our team has considerable park design experience across the southeast and has completed nearly 300 park and open space projects in multiple cities from Asheville to Charleston. Recently, one of our projects, First Ward Park was highlighted in Landscape Architect and Specifier News magazine. ColeJenest & Stone teamed up with Shadley Associates on this 5-acre park in downtown Charlotte as the civil engineer and landscape architect of record.

Completed in the spring of 2016, First Ward Park, in Charlotte, N.C. features a large open central lawn flanked by two public fountains. The park accommodates a summer concert series typically attended by approximately 4,000 residents. University of North Carolina Charlotte’s new City Center Building is a contemporary, urban backdrop for the calming setting of the North Fountain.

First Ward park is encircled by nearly a quarter mile of walking paths that wind through a variety of public-use park spaces. First Ward Park is easily accessible by all, surrounded by restaurants and offices, and benefits from an existing on-site light rail station. The park is also situated near the University of North Carolina Charlotte Center City, First Ward Elementary School, and ImagineON, a children’s library and performing arts center which hosts over half a million visitors annually.

We are proud to have completed this project that will be enjoyed by Charlotte’s residents and visitors in the years to come. Our team is dedicated to the creation of beautiful, high-quality public open spaces and we believe successful public park design is an economic-driver that creates destinations as well as positive transitions to every surrounding land use.
